Over the summer months rugby clubs take time out to reflect on the past season, take stock, and prepare for the 2026-27 campaign kicking off in September.
Clifton faced a tough challenge in National League 1 and , in spite of some fine performances, will return to National League West to face some respected and long-standing opponents. Clubs that survive the pressure of National 1 tend to have their teams bolstered by loan players from Premiership clubs. Clifton have resisted that option out of loyalty to their own club members who have brought them success.
It is testament to the internal growth of players and team bonding that already eight of this season’s 1st XV squad have committed their futures to Clifton over the next two years. Many players have progressed from the club’s flourishing mini and junior club to 1st team appearances and joining Premiership clubs over the years.
A great example is in last season’s Colts XV who were the Bristol champions after some outstanding games. This was recognised at the club’s annual dinner in May when their coach Rich Davies was awarded the much-coveted Beloe Cup as Club Man of the Year for his management and running of the Colts programme. Also, great to these players, as true Clifton men, volunteering at 1st XV games and appearing in the club’s second and third teams.
The Wanderers [second team] have enjoyed a great season and were high in their league which included many clubs not long ago on the 1st XV fixture list. The Misfits [third team] were highly placed with a great try scoring record. No fewer than six players appeared in all three senior teams to demonstrate the pathway.
Player’s Player of the Year was dynamic flanker Jay Evans whose attack and defence were outstanding. The Coaches Player of the Year was full back Harry Johnson whose solid moments under the high ball, line kicking and attacking thrusts were magnificent. Ollie Harris, a former Clifton Junior and now in the Bears Academy was Young Player of the Year. His strong running, try scoring and defence promise so much for the future.
Caps for 50 games went to Evans and hooker George Davey with Zak Hamid receiving his 100 award. Zak is another former junior who has come through the ranks and is the son of club chairman Aftab and mother Sarah who together embody the Clifton spirit The same sentiment held by prop Ricky Cano getting his 150th cap!
